At My Custom Closet, we’ve spent 25 years designing storage spaces that help our clients live more organized and stress-free lives. While most closets we design fall into typical categories like master bedroom closets, laundry rooms, or kitchen pantries, every so often we get the chance to create something truly unique: a themed closet.

What Is a Themed Closet?

A themed closet is tailored to a specific purpose or collection, focusing on “like” items or a special interest. These closets can range from practical to whimsical, depending on the homeowner’s needs; they go beyond functionality and reflect the homeowner’s personal passions, interests, or hobbies in an extraordinary way.

One of the most memorable themed closets we’ve created was an Adventure Closet. This space was dedicated entirely to travel and adventure gear. Extra-deep shelving and cubbies provided room for suitcases and tote bags of all sizes. Specific sections were designed to organize gear for activities like skiing and backpacking, ensuring everything was easy to find and ready to go for the next trip.

A couple other themed closets we’ve designed have included:

  • A game and puzzle closet, with shelves top to bottom to house board games, card decks, and intricate puzzles.
  • A toy closet for a basement playroom, keeping toys neatly organized and easily accessible for kids.
  • A craft and sewing storage room featuring carefully planned cabinetry, drawers, and shelves with custom dimensions to store fabric, thread, and other supplies.

A Closer Look at a Shoe Closet

One of the more unique requests we recently fulfilled was a closet entirely dedicated to shoes.

Shoe closet

When people think of shoe closets, they often imagine luxurious displays with gleaming stilettos showcased under built-in lighting or rows of perfectly aligned boots and sneakers. While we’ve designed high-end shoe closets like this, not every project needs to be extravagant to be effective. This closet proved that an organized space can be both beautiful and practical without breaking the bank.

This homeowner had the ingenious idea to save all her shoe boxes, stacking them in neat rows so that the sizes and contents were always visible. This not only reduced waste but also allowed her to store more shoes in less space. To accommodate this system, we designed narrow shelves that made the boxes easy to see and access.

Additionally, we created an island for the large boot boxes (you can see in this photo that she originally stored them at the top but later realized this was not a good idea). The island creates a lower level space to store the boxes.

The island’s countertop also became a functional surface for sorting and staging items, proving that thoughtful design can elevate both form and function. The result was a space that felt tailored to her needs while showcasing her creativity and organizational skills.

Why Choose a Themed Closet?

At My Custom Closet, we love designing “typical” storage spaces, but themed closets allow us to push boundaries and create something truly personal for our clients. These spaces reflect your lifestyle, interests, and even your “obsession purchases,” like handbags or collectible sneakers. A themed closet is more than just storage—it’s a reflection of who you are and how you live.

Whether you need a functional craft room, a display-worthy shoe closet, or a travel-themed space that inspires your next adventure, our team can help bring your vision to life.
