Most of us have a love/hate relationship with our closets.
Some days, it feels fresh and exciting—maybe you’ve just bought a few new pieces, and you’re mixing and matching outfits, admiring how they look, and carefully hanging them up so they don’t get crushed or wrinkled.
Other days? It feels like a total rut. You wear the same top with the same pants on repeat, skip putting things away, and even though your closet is full, you feel like you have nothing to wear.
At worst, you walk in, trip over shoes you didn’t put away, and crawl back into bed muttering, “forget it.”
The truth is, our closets are where we both start and end our day. We decide who we want to be in the morning—and ideally, we put things away at night. So why not make your closet a space you enjoy?
Here are 5 practical ways to fall back in love with your closet!
1. Stick to One Type of Hanger
This small change makes a big difference. Upgrading to a single type and color of hanger instantly reduces visual clutter and brings a sense of calm to your closet.
With so many clothing types, textures, and colors already in play, using consistent hangers helps everything feel more cohesive. We love slimline velvet hangers—they save space and prevent clothes from slipping to the floor.
2. Out of Size or Out of Season? Get It Out of the Closet
One of the biggest goals in our closet makeovers is to leave clients with only what fits, flatters, and fits their lifestyle—so they can walk in and confidently grab anything off the rack.
That means removing anything too small, too big, or totally off-season.
Letting go of clothing that no longer works for you isn’t just practical—it’s kind. If you think a piece might fit again someday, store it elsewhere for now. Same with bulky winter sweaters in summer or skimpy sundresses in winter—rotate them to under-bed bins, top shelves, or another closet.
Make space for what’s relevant right now.
3. Keep It Clothes-Only
Closets often become a catch-all for anything without a designated home—dumbbells, gift bags, extra linens, electronics…
If it’s not clothing or an accessory, it doesn’t belong in your closet. Move anything unrelated to another space so your closet stays focused and functional.
4. Arrange It to Match How You Dress
We often hear, “How should I organize my closet?” The answer: Start with how you think when getting dressed.
While it’s common to sort clothes by type (pants with pants, dresses with dresses), consider how you choose your outfits. Do you start with color? Sleeve length? Fabric weight?
Tailor your layout accordingly. For example, one of our sweater-loving clients organizes by style (cardigan, crewneck, v-neck) and then by weight (chunky, thin, cotton, wool). It may sound obsessive, but it makes her mornings faster and more enjoyable.
5. Make Favorites More Visible
We all own a few special pieces we love, but rarely wear. Often, it’s just because they’re tucked out of sight or feel like “too much” on a rushed morning.
Bring them into view. Hang them on a valet hook, a coat rack near your mirror, or the front of your closet. Then spend a few minutes creating outfits with them—snap a quick photo or keep coordinating items grouped together. That way, next time you’re short on time, you can still reach for your favorites.
